I like building things that have to work in the real world.
My background is in electrical engineering and computer science, but my work has rarely stayed inside one discipline. I have designed electronics, written embedded firmware and mobile applications, developed secure operational software, coordinated manufacturing, supported customers, and built the business around a product.
#Building MATE Sports Tech
I started MATE Sports Tech while training toward the 2022 Commonwealth Games. I wanted access to performance tools such as velocity-based training devices and timing gates, but the established options were too expensive for many athletes and local clubs.
That problem became two products. Barbell Mate measured velocity, force, and power while lifting. Timing Mate removed the reflector used by traditional timing gate systems, making setup faster and less cumbersome.
I built the company as its founder and sole employee. That meant owning the complete journey: product strategy, electronics, firmware, applications, enclosures, manufacturing, positioning, fulfilment, and customer support.
MATE reached paying customers in more than 25 countries and was acquired by Strength By Numbers in January 2026. I now work as Head of Sports Tech at Strength By Numbers.
#Beyond MATE
From 2023 to 2025, I worked part-time as a Senior Software Engineer with Digital Forensic Sciences Australia. I co-developed Quintilian Map (QMAP), a digital-forensics mapping product used by law enforcement to help investigators connect sightings across time and location.
That work involved collaborating with domain experts, contributing to the analytical approach, and leading the product engineering, secure integration, deployment, and investigator workflows around it.
#Sport
Sport is not separate from how I work. It has shaped my patience, competitiveness, and willingness to keep refining something long after the novelty has disappeared.
I currently compete internationally in the Highland Games and previously competed as one of Australia’s leading discus throwers. Training at that level is also what led me into sports technology in the first place.
#Working together
I take on a small number of fractional, consulting, and advisory engagements. I am particularly useful to founders and small teams building technically difficult products, especially where hardware, software, customers, and commercial constraints meet.
